U.S. Large Business: 5 Nominees
Adrienne Dake
Senior Director, Talent Development
Constellation Brands
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Talent Magnet” - Attracts and optimizes talent at its highest point of contribution.
—
Adrienne’s Nominator said: “During my initial interview, Adrienne said, ‘You have something no one in this organization has and having you here will be a game changer.’ To have a potential manager say that to me during the interview was a big deal, so I took the risk and accepted the job.
Once in the role, she continued to fan the flames of my aspirations. When she provided developmental feedback, it was clear that she knew my aspirations and was committed to helping me improve. I felt so empowered and ended up giving 110%.
In just over a year, my role changed and it meant me leaving her team. Adrienne continued to bolster and help me take bolder steps and roles. She continues to be my mentor and cheerleader.
I am working in an environment where I get to fully utilize my abilities and contribute the most I ever have in my career. It's just the right balance of terribly exciting and terrifying, which is just where I want to be.”
Chad Berndtson
Director, Content Marketing and Social Media
Palo Alto Networks
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Liberator” - Creates a climate of safety and ambition that both invites and demands people's best thinking.
—
Chad’s Nominator said: “Chad is the global head of customer advocacy, social media, threat communications and video at Palo Alto Networks, a global cybersecurity leader. His role requires him to ensure creative juices are flowing and I have always been impressed with how versatile he is in not only promoting a culture of innovation but also creating an environment where ideas thrive.
Although I do not report directly to him (my manager does), he will never fail to reach out, encourage and show the people in the realm of his influence that he's got our back. There were occasions where my manager was not available, and Chad personally showed his support. He listened and expressed his confidence in me, which energized me.
It is no question that the team he leads (me included) can constantly innovate and try out bold ideas.”
Shaun Harris
Director, National Business Care
AT&T
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Challenger” - Defines an opportunity that causes people to stretch.
—
Shaun’s Nominator said: “Since becoming our director, Shaun has empowered our team to do extraordinary things. During his initial “meet and greet,” Shaun expressed that he wanted to make us the "flagship call center" by bringing opportunities, promotions, and pride back. We had heard this vision before from previous managers, but for the first time, Shaun made it happen.
With morale and discontentment at an all-time low and many obstacles that came his way, including a tornado that hit our city, the retirement of a director which added additional responsibilities, and a complete call system revamp, he stood firm in his vision. He made sure that everyone knew he believed in them and their “why.” Our center transformed from a “Service Center” into a “Service and Sales Center” and exceeded sales by an average of 120% within one year!
Shaun has been a real example of what a leader is. He wants the best for our team and desires to utilize all of our talent and capability.”
Julie Bush
LTSS GBD Manager I
Amerigroup
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Liberator” - Creates a climate of safety and ambition that both invites and demands people's best thinking.
—
Julie’s Nominator said: “Julie is a manager of approximately 11 individuals. Our organization started to embrace the "Multipliers" idea and concepts around October of last year, which started with our senior leaders down to a Manager I level. The front line managers were tasked to start working with the front line staff with the concept so that our whole organization was involved.
Julie had taken on that task and truly lives the Multipliers belief both in and out of work. She encourages associates on her team and others to be a Multiplier in their role and is eager to teach others how to get there. Julie is also willing to hold others accountable when they are diminishing those around them.
She has set the bar higher for other managers and leaders in part by setting an example of recognizing and correcting her Accidental Diminishing tendencies. She is truly an inspiration.”
Stephen Held
Chief Information Officer, Vice President
LEO A DALY
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Liberator” - Creates a climate of safety and ambition that both invites and demands people's best thinking.
—
Stephen’s Nominator said: “Stephen has helped me learn and grow at an exponential rate because he allowed me to take chances and fail in a safe environment. He encouraged me to take on things that were outside of my comfort zone and was instrumental in me being the professional I am today. I would not be as successful as I am without his mentorship and leadership.
As a CIO, he was not afraid of my ambition, but instead, he cultivated it. I was striving to move from a Senior IT Director to a CIO. He helped me get there without any fear that it would mean me replacing him.
Today I am a CIO at another firm and owe that to his leadership. He's an entirely selfless leader.”
U.S. SMB Business: 5 Nominees
Brandon Young
Owner
LDSBookstore.com / Engravologist.com
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Liberator” - Creates a climate of safety and ambition that both invites and demands people's best thinking.
—
Brandon’s Nominator said: ”’I have a crazy idea.’ These are Brandon's favorite words and he loves when we say them. He has created a company where employees can explore their ideas and take risks, even if it is not a part of their job description.
Our team encountered a production challenge that was affecting our relationship with a key partner. Though the project was outside the scope of my day-to-day work, Brandon brought me in and I was able to offer a solution based on an article I had recently read. Brandon agreed to my idea and the new workflow has been working great ever since.
Another time, I noticed that we weren't using a purchased domain that interested me. I approached Brandon and asked if I could build a website and run it on my own, which he agreed to. I've since built the site and now manage the entire project.
Though we're a small company, Brandon has personally changed the lives of so many employees, including mine, by allowing us to innovate and help build his company.”
Dan White
President of Strategic Workforce Solutions
AMN Healthcare
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Liberator” - Creates a climate of safety and ambition that both invites and demands people's best thinking.
—
Dan’s Nominator said: “Dan is truly passionate about the personal and professional development of his team members. Dan will instinctively give recognition where it is due, agnostic of structure, department, or company.
To provide an example, a substantial client underwent contract re-negotiation, for which I anticipated to make a worthy presentation and business case about our partnership. As a leadership team, we decided that Dan should provide the intro. What I didn’t expect was that Dan took his time to acknowledge the team–he sang our praises and showcased our work in a way that I would never have been able to do myself.
Dan has demonstrated his support for the team time and time again. What’s more, he encourages his team to fail because, “In failure, we learn!” His encouragement for us to read “Multipliers” provides us coaching on abstaining from being Diminishers to our teams.
Dan is a Multiplier because he leads in a way that amplifies capability, innovation, and talent in the people around him.”
Darlene Templeton
CEO/Founder
Templeton & Associates
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Liberator” - Creates a climate of safety and ambition that both invites and demands people's best thinking.
—
Darlene’s Nominator said: “My mentor, coach, and friend has transformed my life. She is representative of many of the Multiplier behaviors.
In a recent example, I was faced with an ethical dilemma. I could remain quiet or come forward. I didn't want to handle this in an abrupt manner or carelessly. In Darlene's wisdom, she talked me through all of the possible implications one way or the other. She generously and patiently asked questions to gain new information, specifically to increase my critical thinking within the discussion. Out of this came several alternatives that were doable, that allowed me to honor my core values and possibly establish increased rapport and influence over the situation at hand. This is the norm for Darlene.
No matter how hard the situation, she creates an environment in which we can safely work through the difficulty of the situation and arrive at solutions that are in the best interest of all involved, while holding self and others accountable.”
Penny Beich
Assoc Director, Innovation & Improvement
Navitus Health Solutions
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Investor” - Delivers extraordinary results by instilling accountability.
—
Penny’s Nominator said: “Penny has demonstrated "The Investor" qualities a number of times that I have noticed.
One example is we looked to hire someone new to the team. This individual didn't have the skills we were looking for but their cultural fit and their strong ability to be a team fit got them the job. I witnessed this person grow within the company with the support of Penny, giving them the accountability they needed to get where they are today.
Today, they are involved in many different projects and have become an essential part of our organization. It took Penny to see the potential in them to bring them into the company and help get them where they are today.
Though this person has much more room to grow, they are set up to succeed with whatever they want to take on, with Penny's support.”
Robert Gash
VP Engineering
Nurx
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Debate Maker” - Drives sound decisions through rigorous debate.
—
Robert’s Nominator said: “When I joined Symphony Commerce, it was fighting production fires all the time. To serve our customers better Robert hired not just the best possible talent, but also played the consummate debate maker. Robert set up an environment for debate and decision making. This environment was set up outside the auspices of management chain and run by engineering peers which in turn enabled free debates amongst themselves.
He pushed engineers in different directions and constantly challenged them when they fell back to the ‘common wisdom refrain.’ But never once did he castigate the engineers for disagreeing with him. This approach let the engineers freely speak their mind without fear of repercussions.
He also found assignments that helped the engineers showcase their best. An organization which was tumultuous before his arrival, his actions gave an order to the engineering group and brought back what I can proudly say ‘dignity and confidence to the developers.’”
International Business: 5 Nominees
Cesar Lopez
EMEA HR Director DS, GS & Finance
Canon Europe Ltd
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Talent Magnet” - Attracts and optimizes talent at its highest point of contribution.
—
Cesar’s Nominator said: “Cesar has the ability to get the best out of everyone. Anyone who has ever worked with or around him state he is the best leader they ever had or hope to work for. He helps everyone contribute and finds a challenging and exciting role for everyone according to their capabilities, potential, and interests. He gets people to go the extra mile without effort and even makes it fun.
He knows how to transform any problematic or stressful situation into an energizing one. He gets the team to outperform by motivating, engaging and making everyone feel important. He develops people by giving them stretch challenges. He promotes a high performing environment by focusing on strengths and by making his team accountable. There is no fear to fail because he knows how to address issues and transform them into growth opportunities.
During the years, his team members have grown, taking new challenges and responsibilities and we are all now in bigger jobs, thanks to his leadership style.”
Felipe Jose III Zamora
President & CEO
The Golden Legacy Financing Corporation
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Challenger” - Defines an opportunity that causes people to stretch.
—
Felipe’s Nominator said: “Since receiving "Multipliers," Felipe has made a quantum shift in his leadership style. From being a bit autocratic and much too detail-focused, he has shifted to being more of an inclusive leader who welcomes ideas and challenges everyone.
Felipe now has a propensity to assign people projects outside of their job descriptions. An example of this was when he assigned a new project to a younger team member. Felipe saw that her skills and talent weren't being tapped and sought to change this by assigning her a difficult project. Felipe went out of his way to provide personalized mentoring and guidance. He challenged and helped her gain confidence to launch this new product two weeks ahead of schedule. This particular instance sent shockwaves in our organization.
He has become a true example of how being a Multiplier leader can massively impact an organization. By challenging us, we have grown beyond what we thought were the limits of what we could accomplish.”
Mark Fulton
Corporate Strategic Account Leader
3M
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Challenger” - Defines an opportunity that causes people to stretch.
—
Mark’s Nominator said: “After encouraging me to stretch myself, Mark helped me go from divisional leader to winning the Country Health Care Business Leader.
A lot of hard work and self-answered questions came before Mark would offer a single piece of advice or opinion. Working with Mark made my small country (Czech Republic) soar. With few resources, dedicated to headcount and P&L, we grew strong enough to become an area benchmark in becoming a profitable yet highly priced and differentiated portfolio. This was a big success for my internal team and locally cooperating clinicians, being recognized by global divisional leadership. It was also a big success for our customers and patients since they enjoyed a safer and more comfortable experience.
Where ever Mark has gone, from my country to Canada and recently to South Asia, to see that he has been leaving his Multiplier footprint on other teams. I am confident that these teams' performance will be great!”
Martha Herrera Gonzalez
Corporate Social Responsibility Director
CEMEX
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Investor” - Delivers extraordinary results by instilling accountability.
—
Martha’s Nominator said: "She is a social and inclusive activist, passionate about social innovation and a firm believer in the creation of strategic alliances. She has been fostering sustainable development focused on shared value, skilled volunteering, business ethics, social impact, capability development, and youth and women empowerment for more than 20 years.
Throughout her career, she has developed more than 500 alliances and led initiatives that have positively impacted more than 14.1 million people globally.
She is an inspiring woman, and because of her I implemented www.cosecha.org.mx that is a program to help coffee producers in Mexico to be more productive, get a better life for them and their families and to take care of biodiversity."
Susan Mallows
Senior Director, Regulatory & Diagnostics
Janssen R&D
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Liberator” - Creates a climate of safety and ambition that both invites and demands people's best thinking.
—
Susan’s Nominator said: “Susan consistently goes above and beyond in her effort to find opportunities for her team to demonstrate their leadership. Susan sees tremendous value in collaboration and in her team taking the lead in discussions.
As a result, on one occasion I was able to collaborate on an important project and was able to help our team develop a dashboard solution that alerted us if there were potential delays. Susan’s direction and confidence in me provided an environment where my contributions to the decision making and build allowed for a robust solution that the teams can leverage. I believe her behavior helped boost my level of engagement.
As a leader, she sets an example as a strong multiplier which has helped me in leading my people in the same way. Through this Multiplier behavior, Susan has grown our team to a group of professionals that the R&D teams are continually requesting our PMO expertise and Regulatory experience in developing sound regulatory strategies.”
Education/Non-Profit: 5 Nominees
Dr. Anne Marie De Barros Miller
Program Director
Boston Public Schools
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Talent Magnet” - Attracts and optimizes talent at its highest point of contribution.
—
Dr. De Barros’s Nominator said: “Dr. De Barros is a leader who seeks to find new talent and offers opportunities to people who want to refine their skills.
During her first year at the school, Dr. De Barros spent time collecting and analyzing the operations. It became clear that the current student and staff schedules were not meeting the needs of individual students. Rather than mandating a schedule format, she enlisted the support of the staff “schedule expert” to recommend a schedule that better meets the needs of students.
Similarly, Dr. De Barros enlisted the support of other staff who had exhibited expertise in addressing the social-emotional needs of the students. The result was the creation of a point system that reinforces positive behavior and corrects negative ones.
Dr. De Barros's goal is to change the narrative of every single student attending her school because she believes they can all succeed. She has been able to change the academic and social-behavioral outcomes of the students at her school.”
Becky Hacker-Kluver
Education Consultant
Humboldt School District
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Challenger” - Defines an opportunity that causes people to stretch.
—
Becky’s Nominator said: “Becky has led our school in numerous professional development opportunities to meet and exceed expectations. Becky makes us think outside the box and challenges us to look at new ways to improve. Her positive enthusiasm and belief in our ability bring out our best.
Becky has worked directly with us for three years and has increased the intensity of her visits and the accountability of engaging our coaches and principals in coaching cycles. Without her presence, knowledge, and persistence we would still be floundering. She collects information we need for the program to be successful and facilitates discussions with the individuals and the group.
We have seen an increase in the number of collaborative opportunities that our teachers and coaches have participated in. We have seen remarkable things occurring in the classroom and a positive impact on student achievement and engagement, as well as supports for meeting students ‘where they are!’”
James Bouder
COO
Excentia
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Challenger” - Defines an opportunity that causes people to stretch.
—
Jim’s Nominator said: “Jim’s idea sparked a nationwide movement in Autism Services – allowing individuals on the Autism Spectrum and others with developmental disabilities to gain access to the healthcare benefits they need.
Jim’s legislative advocacy and grassroots leadership were instrumental in Pennsylvania being among the first few US states to provide people with Autism the comprehensive healthcare benefits they need. This idea quickly took root and eventually inspired the adoption of similar legislation in 48 of the 50 states, providing much-needed relief for families living with Autism across the country.
Jim recently joined Excentia to continue his work to expand the reach of these services to others. He inspires each of his direct reports to become great leaders and is a strong advocate in the cause of helping people with developmental needs to live as independently and as thoroughly as they desire within their communities.”
Lance Gibbon
Oak Harbor Public Schools
Superintendent
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Investor” - Delivers extraordinary results by instilling accountability.
—
Lance’s Nominator said: “Lance Gibbon has built our schools into a place where everyone wants to teach and learn. He's hosted incredible back to school kick-off sessions for staff by bringing in incredible guests like a former astronaut and a speaker who challenged us to talk about race relations. He's built a positive culture and shown he cares.
Lance keeps the community informed and involved with a weekly positive newsletter, Youtube channel and Facebook page. He is our "story-teller in chief" and spreads the positive our schools have achieved, including national awards. Plus, he travels to Washington, D.C. to meet with Representatives and Senators to spread the positive messages and campaign on our behalf as a Navy town.
Lance is a huge supporter of the Arts and Music in school. You can often find him playing music with our students. He raised our high school graduation rate and expanded our AP and CTE offerings. He's made Oak Harbor feel like home for me.”
Scott Rowley
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Director of HR Technology
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Investor” - Delivers extraordinary results by instilling accountability.
—
Scott’s Nominator said: “Scott is one of the best leaders I have ever worked for! He's driving an enormous transformation project with minimal resources, yet the way he utilizes them is phenomenal. He fully trusts us to own our areas of responsibility and sets high expectations together with us.
Scott demands accountability but creates a safe environment where innovation is not only possible within our small team, but within the larger organization as well. He has forged strong partner relationships across our large organization both vertically and horizontally. With his help, we are on track to be transformed to serve our customers better and to be more talent-focused.
His behavior made me 100% loyal to him. His trust in me makes me demands higher expectations from myself and makes me strive to reach them. His strategic thinking and willingness to include me in the dialogue allowed me to think as an equal team member, not a subordinate. He makes me look for better ways for getting my work done!”
Military/Government: 3 Nominees
Jim Trinka
Chief Talent Management Officer
Dept of Veterans Affairs, Office of IT
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Challenger” - Defines an opportunity that causes people to stretch.
—
Jim’s Nominator said: “As a part of an organizational leadership development strategy, Dr. Trinka designed and developed a recurring (every 3 years) in-person, instructor-led experienced manager course and formed an internal instructor cadre of 59 senior managers to deliver the course. He challenged the cadre to own the course and empowered them to evolve the curriculum, handle the logistics and administration of the courses, and to form self-governing committees to execute delivery of the program.
Over the past two years, the cadre delivered and the course has wildly exceeded expectations as evidenced on improvements of employee survey results: Employee Engagement Index increased 5%; Employee Recognition Index increased 6.3%; Change Management Index increased 5.6%; Communication increased 5%; and Teamwork Index increased 2.3%.
The course has created its own brand and there is now a waiting list for every course offering.”
Patricia Boyle-McKenna
Interim Chief Information Officer
City of Boston
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Talent Magnet” - Attracts and optimizes talent at its highest point of contribution.
—
Patricia’s Nominator said: “With over 10 years of service to the City of Boston, Patricia is truly the woman behind the curtain when it comes to innovative ideas, motivating staff, recruiting diverse and talented teams, and retaining talent. For anyone who her work reaches, it is clear that her passion, dedication to constituents, and support for employees are unrivaled.
As a lifelong resident of Boston and the mother of three young girls and a sister herself, Patricia values work-life balance and encourages those that work for her to do the same. She has advocated for better policies and practices for parental leave for the organization.
Aside from the fact that she's brilliant, Patricia is warm and approachable. Her personality makes her the best problem solver around. We’ve also seen her time and again organizing gifts, thank you notes, drives for daycare, lunches, etc. She understands that the little things that show how people are appreciated make all the difference."
Tom Novak
Medicaid Interoperability Lead
Office of the National Coordinator
—
Multiplier Discipline: “The Liberator” - Creates a climate of safety and ambition that both invites and demands people's best thinking.
—
Tom’s Nominator said: “Tom is always creating an environment for collaborative and creative thought. He works with so many state leaders on such a wide variety of initiatives and yet still has the time to answer a call or text for a quick touch base that almost always provides what you need.
His purposeful knowledge-sharing around federal projects and top of mind awareness around some of the progressive work others are accomplishing across the country is immensely beneficial. He always, in the most polite, passionate and exciting way, challenges you to take your initiative to the next level. Over the years he has helped me drive Medicaid and DSRIP initiatives for NY and NH. Helping navigate teams through complicated consent questions, HIE optimization and always with an eye toward innovation to improve outcomes and lower costs.
Tom's leadership has been a tremendous value proposition for many across the country, and I count myself as one of them.”
